About Me

My name is Sarah and I am known as sysparkle across the internet. I am a watercolor artist currently based in historic Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My work is character centric illustration with themes of the beautiful and the strange, taking inspiration from pop surrealists and a childhood filled with Japanese animation.

Most of my work is done in watercolor, but I will use a variety of media and tools to create the end results, anything from inks to gold foil. I enjoy employing stylized illustration techniques and craft-reminiscent techniques with a tactile dimension.

My love for art making has been with me since I could hold a pencil, but my love for watercolors is much more recent. I have a BFA in Digital Media, so I was trained to work digitally - something I will occasionally use to enhance my traditional work. Watercolor is a beautiful medium that achieves depth and luminescence through layering. It can be managed through proper water control or allowed to flow freely depending on the technique. Technology strives to replicate the random artifacts that traditional medias are known for.

I regularly post new art, work in progress, sketchbook work, and other interesting things behind the scenes on my instagram
